Innovative inorganic ion binders


Sodium zirconium cyclosilicate is an insoluble, non-absorbed, non-polymer inorganic material designed to bind potassium ions with proven selectivity to treat hyperkalaemia.1 This is a potentially serious condition caused by raised potassium levels in the blood and is frequently associated with chronic kidney disease, heart failure and diabetes. Elevated serum potassium levels can potentially lead to cardiac arrest and death.2

Sodium zirconium cyclosilicates are available as powders that can be mixed in water and administered orally. By selectively binding to potassium in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, they are able to lower the concentration of free potassium in the GI lumen, resulting in lower serum potassium levels as rapidly as one hour after ingestion. Normal serum potassium levels can potentially be achieved within 24 to 48 hours.
